Q&A | Agnes Baddoo
Every time I leave the house with my Agnes Baddoo bag, someone comments on it. And then I say, "Oh, do you know Agnes!?" And their answer is disproportionally a yes. It seems like everyone knows and truly loves Agnes. I think of her as the mayor of an invisible but very real city within Los Angeles' creative community. But my favorite thing about Agnes is that often after I blog something or see her out one night, she'll email me the following day with the most obscure, under-the-radar, cool, relevant, or spot-on link. Recently this has included a shoemaker living in Mexico City, a camouflage documentarian in the UK, a whiskey distillery in Red Hook and my recent favorite, Agnes' go-to cure for the common cold. She knows everyone and everything and is extremely generous with her intel gems. Check-in with Agnes and shop her wares here!
If not in Los Angeles, I would live in...a beach, somewhere warm, near a forest and a stream, cultivated yet unspoiled and near civilization. Or Paris.
My dream holiday would be to...Treasure Beach or Saint Thomas, Jamaica.
My current obsessions are…aromatherapy and leather sacs, Kathryn Herrman batik towels and pillows, Rachel Craven's aprons, gauzy pieces from Black Crane, Feal Mor cap sleeved marinieres, and surplus sailor pants.
Food: All about the almond apricot cake, Zenbunni raw chocolate, and everything from Moon Juice.
Music: Bongos Ikwue, Toots Hibbert, Chris Darrow, Vieux Farka Touré, Rokia Traoré, Hazel and Alice, and The Staple Singers.
Fashion: Army Surplus, Margiela, Romeo Gigli, L.H.O.O.Q., Jesse Kamm, Hermes, and Valentino.
Retail Stores: Garde, California Surplus Mart, Feal Mor, Lost & Found, Dream Collective, New High (M)art, Chay, Bazar, Platform, Beatrice Valenzuela's new store, and Moon Juice again!
I channel my childhood self when I...play my guitar, climb a tree, and wear clogs (not in that order).
The fictional character I most relate to is...Nancy Drew.
If I had to be outdoors all day I would...nap, garden, take a wandering walk, catch up on some reading, and nap again.
My favorite quality in a man is...humor and loyalty.
My favorite quality in a woman is...humor and loyalty.
I'm terrified of...rats.
My dream car is a...1980-85 Mercedes-Benz Turbo 300D.
My cocktail of choice is...in general, whiskey in the winter: Bushmills, neat. Summer: I do love mixing up fizzy, boozy drinks, involving flower waters, fresh juices, herbs, and spices. But, these days, Mescal might trump all that.
My celebrity crush is...Trader Joe.
My beauty product of choice is...love, a good night’s sleep, warm water and lemon, rose water, baking soda, coconut oil, and my Clarisonic.
My friends and I like to...sip 'n' chat—a lot.
If I could go back in time for one decade it would be...the pre-disco 70’s.
As a teenager I was totally into...painting, playing guitar, folkies and singer-songwriters, reminiscence tie-string overalls, over-dyed boxers and tanks from Canal Jean or Unique Clothing Warehouse, Air Force flight suits, “borrowing” my dad’s suit vests to wear with t shirts and Levi’s cords, painter’s pants, and clogs. There were a lot of clogs in my youth.
I tend to splurge on...timeless, well-made practical, utilitarian clothes and objets. Over-alls, cover-alls, flight suits, aprons, sailor pants, army jackets/pants of the 60’s/70’s, Japanese worker pants, Levi’s jeans and cords (more often the 517), cashmere sweaters, baskets, and leather tote bags.
My love of work wear, form and function...is what makes me have Tomboy Style.
